Houston Rockets off-season GM write-up

Maybe it stays the same since Morey was likely 'inspired' to step down so that Tilman could get the China money back and will continue assisting the new regime from the shadows, but as I have no clue at all what the future is going to bring and don't want to re-write this piece for the planned 'GM write-up' series that was supposed to be starting after the Finals, I'm just gonna drop it here and let anyone else who wants to take over do it.
I'm out.

State of the team

After a disappointing bubble performance that did not end in a Championship, many people are questioning if the Rockets window has officially closed. In all likelihood, it has; but it is not yet locked, so with the right moves it can be opened enough to squeeze out another deep run or two that can finally break through if the team finds a brick of luck for once.
What those right moves are and how to accomplish them are the challenge posed to Daryl Morey and his crew. There are a number of constraints that will make this difficult, including a lack of draft assets and moveable contracts that are not integral to the team's success, but the most challenging proposition will again be owner Tilman Fertitta's finances.
While some critics may believe that the Rockets small ball experiment was a failure, management will likely point to the fact that 'defense' was not nearly as much of a problem in the playoffs as 'offense' and that Russell Westbrook's obvious impairment from a quad injury was the primary factor in underachieving desired expectations. The general belief in the front office is that the formula is not broken so much as unlucky. Another couple of chances will hopefully bring the health necessary for a breakthrough.
Daryl Morey's top-stated priority entering the off-season was re-signing coach Mike D'Antoni. Well, D'Antoni ended any talk of that by opting to take his services elsewhere before the team plane had even departed Orlando. This leaves the team in search of a new head coach before any other moves can really be considered, since whoever gets the position will likely hope to have a bit of say in any of the roster decisions that need to be made.
The team is casting a wide net in their search having interviewed candidates like frontrunners Tyronn Lue and Jeff Van Gundy, as well as Kenny Atkinson, Wes Unseld Jr., and Stephen Silas. The new coach will need to garner the instant respect of a veteran-laden team (possibly possessing enough cachet to actually inspire a different style of play?), and may need to fulfill Fertitta's desire to make headlines, favoring a big-name hire. It must be included that there is even a slim chance that D'Antoni returns to the role now that Doc Rivers has swooped his pre-supposed landing spot in Philly, but I expect the final candidates may come from the following list of assistant coaches and thus (completely coincidentally) cheaper names in case a need arises to go in another direction:
Sam Cassell - The former Rockets legend is currently serving as an assistant coach for Doc Rivers. Frequently cited as one of the top assistants ready to take the next step. As a former All-Star point guard, he may be able to command the respect of Westbrook and Harden enough to offset his lack of head coaching experience. His big balls could "Make Houston Clutch Again".
John Lucas - The Rockets Assistant Coach is very familiar with the system and the current players. He provides continuity and a cheap, short-term contract that would allow for an easy 'out' if things do not work in the next year or two (which is the optimistic extent of the title hopes for this current iteration of the Rockets)
Chris Finch - An ex-RGV Vipers Head Coach now working as an assistant in New Orleans. He is a savant on offense, on very good terms with Morey and his philosophy, and due for his 'chance' in the bigs. Given the success of Nick Nurse, another coach who won a G-League Championship for the RGV Vipers, I feel as if Chris Finch should end up getting the call (although he appears to have dropped off the radar).
The new head coach will have a challenging job of needing to instantly compete with a roster of vets who are notorious for not being as flexible in their approach to the game as might be desired. This team is not only 'set' in its ways mentally to the point where an attempt to change the team philosophy could easily backfire and result in another lost season, it is also relatively 'set' in its ability to make personnel changes. So expect the new coach to provide more of an 'extension' of the current Moreyball philosophy than a completely different style.

2021 Houston Rockets Roster and Salary

Russell Westbrook 41,358,814 2 more yrs + player option
James Harden 41,254,920 2 more years + player option
Eric Gordon 16,869,276 4 more years
Robert Covington 12,138,345 2 more years
PJ Tucker 7,969,537 expiring
Danuel House 3,717,000 2 more years
Ben McLemore 2,283,034 expiring
Chris Clemons 1,517,981 2 more years of team options
David Nwaba 1,862,250 team option
TOTAL 128,971,157
Things look relatively straight-forward for the Rockets. All of their main rotation guys are already signed and set to return with the exception of Jeff Green and Austin Rivers. The Rockets are prime candidates to start the season off by basically "running it back".
Considering Green has enjoyed great success in Houston's system and seems to have established good chemistry within his role in the system, he will absolutely be considered an important piece to re-sign. He has played on minimum-level contracts for the past few years, so unless another contender surprisingly decides to use part of their MLE on him, he should be able to return on a 1+1 veteran minimum contract.
Austin Rivers has a player option for $2,369,663. It is considered highly unlikely that he will opt-in to this (although he will be welcomed back with open arms if he does). If he leaves, the team will likely look to find a replacement ball-handleperimeter defender.
The hopeful addition of Jeff Green to the list of signed players takes the team to a total of 10 contracts, meaning Morey will look to add 5 more players into the fold.
Positional needs:
The Rockets took one big step closer to the idea of 'position-less' basketball by banishing their traditional centers last season. The big question is, will they continue this philosophy into 2021?
The answer to this may partially depend upon who the next coach is. As previously stated, the advanced age of this particular roster resulting in an extremely small window for success, combined with the players' familiarity with the current roles and system and the reduced off-season leads me to believe that the small ball experiment will continue into the 2021 season. Not only was it proven effective offensively at unlocking the best version of Russell Westbrook since his 2017 MVP campaign, the hybrid switching system the team utilized in the first half of the season to account for Clint Capela's reduced ability to guard perimeter players was not as successful as the switch-everything system the team implemented in the playoffs; so unless the team can get a larger center who can effectively switch 1-5, it is unlikely that 'Center' is going to be seen as a top priority.
Look for the team to try to focus their search on finding long, stretchy, big forwards, as they did with the late-season signings of Jeff Green, DeMarre Carroll, and David Nwaba. They will also try to fill the position of 'tertiary ball handler' should Rivers choose to go elsewhere.
Although Austin may sign another 1+1 minimum deal with the team, it is more likely that he will look for a bigger role (and payday) on another team. There is a small chance he could be used in a sign and trade (Houston has his Early Bird Rights allowing him to sign a contract up to around $8M), so he may serve as salary filler in building a larger sign & trade, but note that such a move will surely push Houston well into the luxury tax, bringing us to...
Luxury Tax Issues:
The expected threshold will probably fall around $132-133M. Houston is brushing up against that with only 9 players under contract currently.
Bear in mind that ownership has suffered catastrophic economic distress this year due to Fertitta's business interests in casinos and restaurants (not to mention that he was never interested in paying tax even in better times with a stronger team). Unlike this season, next year should see a large cash pay-out to non-tax teams as many contenders who were below the tax last year due to their participation in Free Agency will be utilizing exceptions that push them into the luxury tax (Golden State in particular has been making overtures at filling its TPE, which would result in one of the largest tax bills on record). Despite his questionable claims that he is financially solvent and ready to pay tax to field a contender, Tilman Fertitta will be happy to be an owner that avoids paying tax again and instead receives a check from the league. Daryl Morey will have his work cut out for him to achieve that, but after accomplishing it in 2019 and 2020 with masterful tax-reducing moves at the trade deadline, there is little doubt he can (and likely will) do it again in 2021. 2 years ago, he reduced Ryan Anderson's $20M contract through a series of moves to Iman Shumpert's $12M and last year he reduced Capela's $17M hit to Covington's $11M bill. Eric Gordon's $17M is the obvious candidate for reduction this year, and there are a variety of ways in which it could be done.

Potential roster moves

Per usual, Houston does not have any draft picks. They do have almost $5M in cash remaining with which they could purchase a draft pick (potentially even 2 late ones); but most likely Morey will work the pool of undrafted talent to try to find a couple new 2-way contract candidates.
Free Agency:
There are unlikely to be any major moves in the off-season aside from signing 6 players to veteran minimum contracts. Jeff Green and Gerald Green are likely signings. Michael Frazier may have earned a promotion to the main squad, but will more likely continue to stay in the G-League on a 2-way contract. Tyson Chandler and Austin Rivers are candidates who are less likely to be re-signed, but may end up filling the same roles they did this year. Otherwise, expect Morey to take fliers on guys who have high upside in the system that are cut by other teams or don't get the larger contracts they are hoping to find and willing to take short term deals in Houston in an effort to rebuild their value.
Although technically below the tax, using the Full MLE would hard-cap the Rockets at a level providing almost no flexibility for in-season maneuvers, something Morey despises, so the taxpayer mini-MLE is the only practical option available this off-season. However, if avoiding the luxury tax is a priority (Narrator: "It is."), then using the MLE at all is not going to be feasible. Houston has avoided using the MLE for the past 2 seasons (with the exception of utilizing small portions of it to lock up undrafted players on cheap 3-year deals), and is likely to follow in that path this year.
Morey traditionally does his best work at the trade deadline, and will likely look to that time frame again in the 2021 season.
There is one (unlikely) way that the Rockets could utilize their full MLE - by sending a current player to another team for less salary in return, leading us to...
The Rockets do not have a lot of positive-value contracts they can part with that are not a critical part of their core.
Danuel House is on a good contract, and the team may be looking to move him if they believe his bubble antics were problematic for future chemistry. He could likely be moved with no problem. This would also be an easy way to cut a couple million dollars in salary, if necessary.
PJ Tucker and Robert Covington are also on good deals, but are crucial to the Rockets scheme. It is extremely unlikely they will be dealt. James Harden and Russell Westbrook are also unlikely to go anywhere in the off-season. If disaster strikes or a deal that can't be refused arises, then there is a small chance one or more of these 4 could be moved at the deadline.
As stated before, Eric Gordon is the most likely candidate to be traded. While his improved bubble play may have gotten his contract closer to 'neutral' value, it is likely that a pick would need to be attached to it in order to bring back a player of value, particularly from a rebuilding team, which is also the traditional place where he could be sent into cap space to avoid bringing back 80% in matching salary. However due to his age and injury history, he is probably only of interest to a team that fancies itself as 'contending' for something. There is a small chance that he could be sent to Golden State, as his contract fits within their Traded Player Exception and he fills a position of need, but it is unlikely that Houston is anxious to improve a conference rival (however, the idea that he could possibly bring back draft capital and increase the size of the league's payout check to non-taxpaying teams make this a scenario that can not be discarded outright).
Sending Gordon into space is the best way for Houston to access its full MLE (as well as creating a hefty TPE of their own). However, it would likely have to happen in the window after the draft and before free agency shakes out in order to be an option. And it would likely entail losing Houston's only first round pick that is available for trade, making later moves more difficult (so I don't expect this to happen).
Available Picks that can be traded:

2021 1 worst of HOU, OKC, MIA
2022 1 cannot be used this year in conjunction with the 2021 pick
2021 2 swap rights with Philadelphia
2024 2 from GS
*All of the team's own second round picks from 2024 and beyond
Houston does not have a lot of draft capital. Morey will surely look to use the 2021 first at the trade deadline to move a contract, allowing him to keep the 2022 first (Houston's last tradeable first round pick thanks to the Stepien Rule) for use next year if necessary.
Possible scenarios:
Which contract(s) and for what type of deal are the only questions, and only time will tell what those needs are (best player available/positional need/salary cap savings) and how to best fulfill them. There are a ton of options and no one can tell what sort of needs or opportunities will arise by mid-way through next season. But by waiting to strike until that point, Morey maximizes his potential to do the best thing for the team going forward, whether it is a small move for tax savings, a big splash for a disgruntled superstar, or even the beginning of a total rebuild.
Waiting until the deadline also gives guys like Gordon and Westbrook a chance to overcome the injuries that plagued them in 2020 and raise their trade value. Trading either one of these contracts for multiple smaller contracts (at 80% value) is the fastest and easiest way to get to within striking distance of avoiding the tax again this year, and allowing Morey to 3-peat in cap wizardry.
I suppose I'll predict that 1) Gordon and a pick will be headed someplace like Philadelphia, who could use his shooting (maybe for Josh Richardson and Zaire Smith?) or perhaps, 2) Morey will work with Monte McNair in Sacramento to do a deal for someone (maybe Nemanja Bjelica and Jabari Parker?), much like he did with his other recent protégé-turned-GM, Gersson Rosas, at the 2020 deadline.
Of course, there is always the chance that Fertitta will find some money in his couch cushions, or have a come-to-Jesus moment that inspires him to pay the tax, which would open up the possibility of trading for a player who makes equal or more money or potentially even using the MLE this year. In the extremely off-chance that that happens, a perfect candidate would be Myles Turner in Indiana, who would provide the stretch-big rim protector that would fit so well in Houston's system. Aaron Gordon would also fit really well into Houston's system as long as he can hit a corner 3. Doing either of these trades and avoiding the tax is within the realm of feasibility if another contract (e.g. House or Tucker's) is included with Gordon's.
And to wrap this up, a few potential FA targets to use the MLE (or a potential S&T) on if it somehow becomes possible: Serge Ibaka, Jerami Grant, Aaron Baynes, Davis Bertans, Bogdan Bogdanovich, a Morris twin, Danilo Gallinari, Anthony Davis.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OC Tournament #4: R6M3 - Gioia Arancini vs. Yuigahama Kaito

The results are in for Match 2...
Location - Washington, DC:
It had been quite some time since Pengolo had seen many of the Rascals. Since their home–however involuntary as it may have been–had been destroyed, they had gone their separate ways. Nowhere Man had retreated to his commune; Take had long distanced themselves; and Tunde had joined an alliance with other UU players. With this newfound freedom, Hive returned home and resumed his work with the Red Cross.
It was in his nature to help those when and where he could. And it was for that reason that his mind kept straying back to the fall of La Villa and all those who had been left behind. Hive had managed to convince Lucas not to dive back in for them with the same reasoning his Stands had given him: those still within would be safe as the escapees regrouped. Hive and Lucas had kept in contact since then, eyes to the day when they would reconvene to finish the fight. His dear Marcella would have to wait, just a little longer.
He perked up as he heard the door ring. Lucas hadn’t mentioned he would be around any time soon… he’d said he’d been across the country the other day. He smiled warmly.
Imagine his surprise it was another of his friends!
Sure enough, the woman was standing on his doorstep, donning a head wrap and sunglasses which she lowered to wink at him. “You sound surprised.”
“Well, yeah!” Hive wiped the shock off his face and beamed at her. Tunde had given him no contact info before leaving, but evidently still having kept tabs on him. But when he opened the door wider so that she could enter, she shook her head, staying on the threshold. Hive frowned. “Can’t stay for long?”
Tunde nodded. “Unfortunately not, but at least I bring a gift.” At this, the space behind Tunde warped and distorted, 「AmbitionZ」 shimmering into view. Hive recognized the Stand from its late user’s sojourn in La Villa, but even still...he lifted his eyepatch.
His new friend, 「Solid State Scouter」’s reticle focusing on the Stand leering before him. Even in the glimpse he got before he had to shut his eye and put back on his patch, he could tell much had changed about it.
Hive looked at her with some suspicion. “Where did you find 「AmbitionZ」?”
“I had to run some errands in Egypt. Share some notes, reconnect with some old friends, I thought you two might be able to get along.” 「AmbitionZ」 floated over to Hive, chittering happily to itself all the while, looking over him hungrily.
Seemingly mollified, he could feel the click of it attaching to him, binding to his soul. Could feel the slow drain of its weight on his flesh, as it began to be eaten away…such a wonderful feeling. He stroked over his arm. This Stand…「AmbitionZ」...he’d have to make himself the best meal he could be for his new friend.
Hive understood that 「AmbitionZ」 saw itself as a weapon, something aimless and destructive, but he was so familiar with aimless. He knew his friend was far from the death machine that others may have seen it as. But, if it were a weapon, he sheathed it, dispelling the Stand… for now. He could properly introduce it to the others later. He looked up at Tunde, only to see her walking back into the night.
“Hey, wait up!” He called, extending a hand. She turned a bit, a smirk on her face.
“I’ll see you soon, Pengolo. But I still have matters to attend to first. You do too.” She waved. “I’ll see you sometime.”
Tunde hummed to herself, paging through her trusty little book. So many labs, so many people, so much material… ah, this was a really wonderful day. A breakthrough. A chance to set the wheels turning, to put her little plan into motion. Maybe someone would even come after her soon…Schioppo? Gioia? Kaito?
She smiled, holding the pages to her chest. Oh…all of them were so wonderful…any of them would be. Hadrian, that dear boy, was surely living his life as well. She would have to look into him later….
True warmth blossomed in her. Her life really was a blessed one. Her eyes had been opened, and this sight…she wouldn’t turn down this path for anything.
The winner is Tunde Ó Santos, with a score of 63 to Hadrian Moore’s 55!

With that, we must now sadly bid goodbye to Team Neptune, Ocean’s 11, the fifth team to be eliminated from Tournament 4. They came out swinging from the very first match, and while they didn’t often make the top of many perceived rankings, no one could deny the impact they had, and they clearly had what it took to stick around into the quarterfinals.
Let’s take a moment to remember…
8th Place: Jeremiah Peacekeeper - This firefighter may have gotten in over his head in a larger than life battle against Fighter Jet, but you can’t deny he put on a show and went out with a bang.
7th Place: Annabelle - She may have been quiet during her time in the Bohemian Archive, but after coming in second during the Running of the Bulls, it’s rumored she began having some… interesting interactions with people in high places.
6th Place: Akira Inoue - Silent and unknown among her teammates like Annabelle before her, Akira RETIRED quietly after losing a football game to the Black Label Society.
5th Place: Calendar Waters - This four swordsman might have gotten eliminated as a player during Round 1 while fighting a confectioner in a corn maze, but don’t let that fool you; he just started adminning matches for them instead! Between a cooking contest and penguin sledding, no one could doubt his loyalty to Andromeda. Of course, being four boys in one took its toll on him eventually and the separate Cals went their separate ways.
4th Place: Jack Norworth - While he may have settled in comfortably to his role as the team’s Mission Control, let’s not forget his own impressive showing as a player. He began his run by teaming up with his Bug Bro to fight in a Georgia apple orchard. After this, he came second in a cooking competition refereed by his former teammate
3rd Place: Eugene “Buggy” Baxter - In this run, Jack’s Bug Bro proved himself a proper Biblical Plague to those who crossed him. It started off strong in that apple orchard, and he followed it up even stronger. You see, he brought locusts back to Egypt with the ultimate result of toppling a corrupt self-proclaimed Pharaoh. But his luck ran out in another desert when he made some tactical mistakes against a pair of snipers under a Bad Moon.
2nd Place: Lenoir “Nora” Kleid - Put simply, Nora was the heart and soul of this team. It started off slow when she lost a football game, but she got a second chance and proved herself worthy of it. Like Jack, she found herself working as the team’s Mission Control, but wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in a raid on a Black Beetles Warehouse. Ultimately, she couldn’t quite take victory against Urban Uprising’s other legendary old-timer in a friendly casino collectathon, but her presence can still be felt without a doubt.
1st Place: Hadrian Moore - There are no two ways about it; Hadrian was a force to be reckoned with, and no one doubted that for a second. He took the very first Tag in a high-octane train fight and his momentum never slowed. One of the most effective character-defining moments in the tourney was his Trout Speech during a battle on a rotating iceberg. Seriously. Read it. After that, he raided the Black Beetles’ headquarters and took down their head Stand alongside Demis Roussos. Back in Urban Uprising, he was able to gaze at the Incomprehensible Face of God Which Cracks the Sky and come out unscathed. His biggest impact, however, was undoubtedly when he reunited with Demis and killed Nate Selleck. But even his streak had to end, and ultimately, Tunde had the ambitions to take him down.

Schioppo Fucile wasn’t the only Fairy Feller anxious and brooding during the first weeks of 2021, worried about how he’d be able to take down one of the most dangerous women in the world, a direct threat to those he cared about.
Caring about people was not something Ric Hawks considered a strong suit, and in some ways that was an advantage. Getting too worked up about his fears for Melanzane and the Fellers would play right into the Iron Rooster’s ability. But it didn’t mean he didn’t care at all. Far from it. The departure of Stefan had left a hole somewhere Ric hadn’t known existed.
All of this passed through his head as he lay awake in the dark of his motel room. He’d poured the last year of his time and income into Urban Uprising and then XPLICIT, with nothing to show for it. Sure, Kris, Schioppo, and especially Gioia had succeeded in taking down Lyte thanks in no small part to his own research, but…
Ric’s thoughts were interrupted by the creak of a door and a beam of light from the hallway. The Arancinis stepped inside the room Melanzane and Ric were sharing, moving quietly to avoid disturbing him.
“Hey,” Ric said gruffly. No point in them trying not to wake him when there was no chance he’d get any sleep tonight anyway.
“Ah, did we wake you?” Melanzane asked.
Ric sat up and shook his head. “No. Can’t sleep anyway.”
“I am sorry to hear that, my friend. What’s bothering you?”
Ric clicked on the bedside lamp and shot the ballerino a look. “Guess.”
“Feeling powerless in the face of Saint Cecilia?” Melanzane mused. “I must admit I can relate. There is little I can do anymore without danger, but such is the way of things. We must be strong, yes?”
Ric grunted in noncommittal agreement.
Gioia watched the two men silently, her own worries mounting. Ric, her father, and her boyfriend were all walking into dangerous confrontations, and everyone seemed too afraid to even communicate with each other. Noriko and Kris were both pulling double-duty as the voices of reason and positivity, fine lines for the bus driver and traceur to walk.
“We can’t worry about her yet anyway,” she found herself saying. “She’s been keeping her head down all year, and there’s plenty to clean up closer to home.”
Ric looked up. “Oh yeah?”
“Remember when we were with La Horde?” Gioia asked. “What the guys from Ocean’s 11 said, what they found about the Black Beetles. Selleck and his intern might be dead, but there’s still XPLICIT out there. Hadrian made it all the way through their top Stand to get this information.”
“We already have a mission, Gioia,” Ric growled. “Schioppo’s already chasing a vendetta, and we can’t afford anyone else running off chasing sidequests.”
“Sidequests?” Gioia chuckled sadly. “You’re starting to sound like Stefan.”
“He has a point, though,” Melanzane noted.
Gioia sighed, straightening her back and looking Ric and her father in the eye, each in turn. “It’s more than just Cecilia. I’m not going to let anything go half finished.”
Location - Somewhere outside Sacramento, California:
Clear skies and a nice, lazy morning, a man in a white suit with black floral designs reclined in a lawn chair on his porch and idly strummed on a banjo. Despite being a capo of a massive gang, a lone Lennon played for an audience of plants rather than people, dulcet chords floating out over the orchard.
All the Beetles’ warehouses were changed out, the shipping routes rerouted, and more to ensure others couldn’t get their hands on their product. Instead, the gang’s supplies of XPLICIT were being recalled, all stores sending it to a location.
All stores except one: Lennon’s pride and joy, this farm and his Stand ability had allowed him to maintain the stream of XPLICIT that they had, but all that was coming to an end too. XPLICIT wasn’t worth the hassle, before it was easy to measure out the product to prevent rampant Stand manifestation, but now that the cat was out of the bag, even just holding it was a liability.
Lennon had tried to keep his cash crop, even trying to create a hybrid to match its drug quality without the side effects. However, after countless debates with Carter, he ultimately agreed to burn this bridge and move on with the rest of their operations. At least the shipping lines they had set up were worth something.
The pick broke after days of use. Lennon frowned, before slipping off his ring. He pinched it between his fingers and, after a few picks and plucks to accustom himself to its weight and feel, resumed strumming. Even if the gang didn’t have much use for XPLICIT, others still did. And so, Lennon waited. He didn’t need to waste any manpower to take care of the farm, sooner or later there should be a Stand user or two coming.
All Lennon had to do was wait.
Location - San Francisco, California:
Kaito basked in the air of a sunny Californian winter morning. Not a flake of snow to be found, just a smile on his face, and a train ticket to Sacramento in his hand. The once-member of the Civil Disobedients, now disbanded, found himself walking with a purpose towards the train station. It really felt like he had turned over a new leaf. He was able to start putting the last few months behind him, and continue doing his own thing… which he had yet to decide what it would be.
Never mind a bout of teenage indecision; for Kaito, life was looking up. He had even begun reconnecting with another former Civil Disobedients member, Djimon! As the young brewmaster had angrily departed from the team during a stroke of poor luck, he thought he had ruined that particular relationship forever. But when he had accepted the call to join the Uncivil Umbra, there he found a familiar face in Djimon, and a mutual desire to rekindle the old friendship.
Making his way to the designated platform, he found himself now pondering the disbandment of Uncivil Umbra. It had only been hours, maybe a day or two at the most, but the level of purpose and comradery he had felt while he had been there was unmatched. He had set out to help collapse Lyte, and had succeeded in his task. Arrests were made, perhaps he had found a little too much fun in some particular destruction, but with the danger thwarted, he was able to just have fun with his Stand, act his age again!
On the horizon, a train sped towards the station, and as it pulled beside the platform, creaking to a halt, over the PA, a voice sounded.
“Now boarding for Sacramento.”
Finding a seat onboard, Kaito shoved his ticket into his pocket, staring out the window as he recalled what he had set out to do. He had heard bits and pieces about a certain vineyard through the grapevine—no pun intended. It was run by the Black Beetles, and inexplicably, the operation was tied to XPLICIT production.
If Kaito could have a hand in shutting it down, he’d do it.
Location - Somewhere outside Sacramento, California:
Kaito hopped out of the car at the given address, the taxi peeling away behind him. He looked around at the quaint entrance, the grass and shrubs scattered around the property neatly manicured. Kaito rubbed his fingers idly over the leaves in a shrub shaped in a way he had never seen before. For the supposed drug stockpile of a gang, the villa was oddly serene, quiet. No one and nothing in sight as he looked around. He had been expecting something else, although he couldn’t quite put what that was into words. Maybe some beaten up, foreclosed hideout? Blood splatters on the dirt, “No Trespassing” signs on a barbed wire fence? Soon, however, his eyes fell upon a person walking deeper into the property.
The woman turned to face him, her guarded expression softening to one of recognition. A young man with whom her teammates had become very acquainted, and whose teammate she had the utmost respect for. Gioia waved out to him. “You must be Kaito. My name is Gioia Arancini. I’m a friend of Kris and Noriko’s.”
“Oh!” Kaito straightened out, smiling warmly and waving likewise. “Yeah, that’s me! Nice to finally meet you, Gioia.” Chuckling, he continued. “Fairy Fellers, what’s with me and running into you over and over again? Without you guys, I’m not sure I would’ve been able to take on that Fork-head!”
Gioia blinked, “Who?”
Kaito flushed slightly, “Don’t worry about it! It’s uh—he’s off doing his own thing I think, don’t worry about it!” In recovery, he gestured up the winding dirt road that led to the side of the property. “Let’s see what’s up, c’mon!”
The walk up the long path was fairly quiet, no signs of danger to be found. For a man that could control plants, it didn’t seem like any here would be too capable of harming anybody. Thornless white roses, a bed of 10 leafed clovers, a tree growing multiple different species of apples, an odorless rafflesia and other rare or mildly interesting plants.
As they continued walking they began to hear...a banjo playing in the distance? The performer could just barely be made out now: a man in a white suit with floral patterns, it seemed that one of the leaders of the Black Beetles was sitting right in front of them,
“Hello there,” Lennon waved to them as they approached, lazily rocking in a chair on the porch. “How’d you guys like my collection? Pretty neat, ain’t it?”
Kaito smirked, and broke into a sprint, 「Fujisawa Loser」 summoned behind him. “KANPAI!” He yelled out, a tendril of booze prepped to slam down on the front steps.
Lennon blinked, and tossed a black rose from his suit in his direction. The rose floated down and burst into a small cloud. Kaito stumbled, eyes watering. “ Ah sh… aah…..aaah….. Aachu..aachu!” He began to sneeze uncontrollably, falling to the ground clutching his stomach as it became more and more difficult to breathe, vision swimming as his eyes kept watering.
“Kaito!” Gioia yelled, reading herself into a sprinting position as well—
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you” Lennon chimed in, getting Gioia to pause slightly. “There’s still pollen hanging in the air. Besides, I just wanted to talk to you two. Nothing more.” Kaito’s sneezing began to subside, and he started taking deep breaths, gasping as if he had just been drowned and resurfaced.
“...Now, you two are here which means you should know how us Black Beetles work. What we’re doing.” Lennon raised his right hand and flashed a peculiar looking ring. “Now I promise you what I’m telling you is true. The Black Beetles are getting out of the XPLICIT business. Everything has been recalled or is being destroyed at this moment. Behind this house is my XPLICIT farm, I already cut their water supply and mostly killed the trees. I just need some people to help me break and toss them away.” Lennon extended his hand to the two of them, “Now that’s where you two could give me a hand.”
Kaito and Gioia look to each other. Kaito laughed. “So you want people more inclined to kick your ass to do your work for you? Maybe the rest of the gang is busy, huh?” He brushed the stubble on his chin. “You’re totally using us, right?”
“Does it matter?” Lennon stated. “You’re getting what you wanted, for free, and I’m prepared to give you something for the effort. I do have some information you guys may be interested, and you did come all this way to make sure the XPLICIT is gone, right?” Lennon stood up, “The choice is yours. You can leave, break the trees yourselves...”
Lennon walked up to the door. “Or you could try and fight me. I wouldn’t recommend it. Talk to me in the greenhouse behind the house once the deed is done.” With that, he went inside and closed the door.
Gioia and Kaito stared at the house, and glanced to each other awkwardly. There was absolutely no way that the house wasn’t trapped extensively.
“This is odd,” Gioia said simply. “You’re right in that we’re being used.”
“Yeah,” Kaito added. “I wanted to try a little fighting before I did what I came here to do, but….”
“But it would be near suicide to go in without extensive preparations of our own. Very likely fireproofed as well.”
Kaito shrugged. “Well, anyways!” He punched his fist. “I’mma go ahead and get started.”
Gioia quirked an eyebrow. “Even though we’re being used?”
Kaito scoffed. “So what, people have been using me for years. I don’t care, he gets something out of it and I get a good time. Win win.” He began walking to the back, everything he wanted to say said.
Gioia sighed, but she could see his point. She didn’t want to leave the existence of this orchard to continue, and she’d prefer to ensure this herself. Besides that, the information Lennon could give was tantalizing. To have any advantage going forward to her next battle….
She turned away hesitantly from the house and followed Kaito, bemused.
When the two walked around to the back, a vast orchard open up before them, row upon row upon row of trees stretching out into the distance. Yet, rather than bearing fruit, strange pods hung from their branches, their contents apparent to both.
“Hey, Gioia,” Kaito piped up, Gioia turning to face him in acknowledgement. “You remember that time at the swamp, yeah?”
“Yes...what about it?”
“You got us pretty good back there, but I’m running it back,” Kaito smirked. “There’s a lot of trees we gotta smash, so we may as well make this fun. Whoever breaks more of them wins?” He offered her his hand.
Gioia chuckled softly. Her reputation had preceded her, and if this “sidequest” could include a friendly competition, there was little reason to decline. She placed her hand into his, shaking it firmly. “Very well. You’re on, Kaito.”
Kaito squeezed her hand with an enthusiastic grin, shaking it wildly. The buildup to the starting gun always got his blood pumping. He had this competition in the bag. What were a few wimpy trees compared to a raging fire, anyway? Bringing his hand back to his side, he gave Gioia one last glance, both readying themselves to a starting position.
“Three…” began Kaito. “Two…”
“GO!” Shouted Gioia with a laugh, running off into the orchard, a flustered Kaito following suit, yelling after her.
“You didn’t ‘open the game’!”
Location: Lennon’s XPLICIT farm in Sacramento, CA. In front of you, arranged into a square are four square plots of Lennon’s trees, each about an acre big (about 60 x 60 meters each) with trees bearing pod-fruit structures containing unprocessed XPLICIT. Separating the orchard into these quadrants are dirt paths, 4 meters wide.
There are about 5 meters in between the rows of trees and each column contains 30 trees spaced around 2 meters apart. This means each acre contains 360 trees for 1440 trees total. Each tree is only around 2 meters tall, but are fairly durable for their size at around C Durability and well rooted. Given the spacing of the trees, fires wouldn’t be able to jump or spread too easily and it is impossible for them to spread across different rows from their position.
Behind the players is a large tool shed and every 20 meters around the edges of the field are industrial sized plant waste containers. The tool shed has everything from chainsaws to shovels to pesticide and anything else a farm or gardener may need. On the opposite side of the area, across the field from the players is a vehicle shed with farming vehicles such as tractors, motorized lifts, plows, cultivators, etc.
Goal: Destroy more trees than your opponent! Attacking your opponent would violate the competition you’ve set for yourself and result in an immediate loss, but you can mess with them.
Additional Information: Lennon has left a note saying “Help yourself” on the tool shed door and you are free to take whatever you want from inside to start off the match with or take during the match. Lennon has also made the same note on the vehicle shed and the keys to the vehicles are in their ignition. Lennon doesn’t care whatever method you use to get rid of trees as long as the job is done.
Since the XPLICIT is in its unprocessed form, trying to use it has no effect beyond tasting really bad.
Team Combatant JoJolity
Fairy Fellers Gioia Arancini “It’s the second tree from the right. Memorize it. Make sure you don’t forget that spot.” If you’re gonna do this job, it better be done thoroughly. Destroy trees from as large an area as possible over the course of this match!
Civil Disobedients Yuigahama Kaito “Shit, I gotta find it...there should be some sodium chlorate here!” This is your golden ticket to do some demolition, but you’re here to have fun too. Mix things up and use as many different ways for destruction as you can!

Things To Do: Jan 21st to 27th

Hi guys - before we move forward with the weekly things to do post, we wanted to provide some clarity on why a new account is creating this post and provide the community with some information about who we are and how this came about. We’ll keep this intro brief for the sake of getting to what you actually came here for, finding cool things to do this week! We are 4 childhood friends (and are all Redditors as well), who grew up living and hanging out in Toronto. We realized every time we hung out we ended up at the same places because it was far too cumbersome to find anything else, and even though we wanted to explore new things, it just felt easier to go somewhere familiar. We decided we’d try our hand at creating something that makes discovering new things to do easy, and over the last few years and countless of hours later, we created the ExploreTO app. We really admired the daily things to do posts, and also aspired to contribute to the Reddit community in a way that is aligned with our passion project. Our focus on event research has been increasing over the last several months and when we saw that the mods have started doing the posts, we reached out to see if there was a way we can contribute. We are very delighted that the mods gave us the opportunity to create these weekly posts on a trial basis, and we hope you enjoy them! We also wanted to get ahead of some questions that you may be wondering about:
How will this affect me as a user who frequently uses these posts?
It won’t. We wanted to be transparent in this post because we know the passing of the torch may be confusing. We hope to maintain a great and consistent experience with these posts and improve it further over time based on feedback from the community.
We don’t want these posts to turn into anything but what they have always been: a community generated post that captures the best things happening in Toronto.
So what’s in it for you?
To be frank, these posts take quite a bit of time a week to compile, especially if you aren’t already doing it for another purpose (we are, for our app). We thought it might be mutually beneficial to the community for us to generate these posts as we’re already doing a lot of event research. The community will get a weekly things to do thread that is continuously updated & improved, and we will get exposure for our app. We will never be impartial to events that “benefit us”, this will not only be true in the Reddit threads we post, but also in the app itself. We see our job as finding the best things to do based on the merit of the events themselves. We will never post affiliate or sponsored links on Reddit, however, if the community believes we’re doing a good job, we would be happily welcome anyone to check out our app.
Closing thoughts
Just like the app was created as a passion project, these posts will only be a continuation of said project. We have no clue how far the app will go and we’ve already spent thousands of hours working on it with nothing earned but the joy of a few positive reviews on the app store. We will however, ask you – the community, for one thing: if you enjoy these posts or derive some benefit from them, occasionally, please let us know. Between our day jobs and our evening passion project that is this app, we’re running on fumes and positive reinforcement. This is the first and last time we will add this intro on the post. We will link to it in the next few so that anyone who may have missed it can still access it. If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask. Hope you enjoy this week's post!

The JonBenet Ramsey Case: Emerging Child Sex-Ring Allegations, Political Connections and a Suspect By Alex Constantine 2000

Introduction: The Belinda Schultz File
  1. Southwestern Child-Pornocrats
A) The Huey Meaux Connection
B) Jerry J. Moore, Houston Real Estate Developer.
C) The Prime of Ms Tweet Kimball
2) Supporting Evidence of Child Sex Ring Involvement
A) A Brotherhood
B) The Belgium Syndrome
C) Lawrence Schiller & the Designated Patsy (Ramsey)
Introduction: The Belinda Schultz file
On March 22, I received a call from Joe Calhoun, a reporter from the Denver area and a recipient of an Academy Award in 1990 for his investigative work on The Panama Deception. For the record, we had talked once before, also by telephone, about the JonBenet Ramsey case, exchanged observations, and thatwas the extent of my past relationship with him. At the time, I had an uncomfortable feeling that Boulder police spokesmen, the cable martinets and investigative “experts” on the case were misrepresenting the facts. Calhoun was in town, Los Angeles, and wanted to discuss the murder in detail.
Shortly thereafter, Calhoun, with the bearded, wide-eyed demeanor of an academic on the brink of a discovery, dropped a folder on my desk. For this record, he read a prepared statement:: “I am a freelance journalist who has been covering the JonBenet Ramsey case since its beginnings. There are only a few news conferences in Boulder that I have not attended. At the last news conference, on October 13, 1999, the day after the announcement by Alex Hunter that there would be no charges filed in the Ramsey case following the adjournment of the Grand Jury, myself and a few individuals were given a file.”
I was, at this stage, stepping more or less blindly into a quagmire of details after three years of following the public debacle casually on the cable talk shows. Whatever Calhoun had, I was not in the mood for conspiratorial moonshine, but he had been down this road himself the file, containing 23 pages of interviews with a victim of organized child abuse in Colorado and Texas, “was of such a bizarre nature, I was extremely circumspect about regarding it as a collection of genuine documents andconfidential memos. I jokingly referred to it to some of my colleagues as The Blair Witch Project of the JonBenet Ramsey case. I didn’t pursue any of the leads mentioned in the file until recently.
Three weeks ago,” Calhoun recalled, “a 37-year-old woman from San Luis Obispo, California came forward with information to Boulder Attorney Lee Hill. She alleged that she came from a family of inter-generational child abuse victims, and had been abused since the age of three by a powerful group of pedophiles, some of whom were associates of the Ramsey family. I dug up the file I had originally obtained in October and decided to give it a second look, since the information contained therein seemed to parallel the information the woman was providing Boulder D.A. Alex Hunter and the police. Upon rereading all of the information contained in it, and cross-referencing names, the entire file had more of a flow of information.”
Calhoun came to entertain the notion that the sex-ring allegations surfacing sporadically on the edge of the case might have some merit. “On March 21, I contacted the Pearline, Texas Police Department for verification of the Paul Schultz [child sexual abuse] case mentioned in the file. I was immediately transferred to Detective Bill Colson,. He was unaware of the recent developments in Boulder concerning the 37-year-old woman from San Luis Obispo, California. However, Detective Colson confirmed the following: The case number ‘951302,’ on pages 7 and 14, is genuine, and the woman, Belinda Schultz, currently living in Cypress, Texas, in a notarized statement contained in the file, at the time would [have been] more likely to give information concerning the Ramsey case. And a Boulder detective was in Texas in December, 1997, seeking information regarding Paul Schultz [her estranged husband] and his involvement, if any, in the JonBenet Ramsey case.”
Calhoun placed the next call to a private investigator, Char Blaiser, wife of O.J. Simpson attorney Robert Blaiser, at her office in Sacramento, California. Ms Blasier, whose office had been contracted by Boulder police to obtain social security numbers of everyone close to the Ramsey case, reportedly states that the night after the JonBenet murder, a caller claiming to be a member of the Ramsey family told her, “I want to talk to you about Paul,” but disconnected when put on hold. Blasier, Calhoun recalls, “was extremely surprised that I had information in my possession concerning Paul Schultz, and essentially confirmed the information regarding the JonBenet Ramsey case.”
“It is clear,” Calhoun says, “from the statements of both Detective Colson and Char Blazer that the Boulder authorities were very interested in a connection between the death of Jonbenet Ramsey and what appears astonishingly to be organized pedophilia on a national level, perhaps with a criminal government license.”
Child sex and pornography rings with political ties have been known to exist. In 1995, for example, Linda Rozar, president of Concerned Citizens for Florida and chapter head of the American Family Association, a branch of presidential candidate Gary Bauer’s ultra-conservative Federation, pledguilty to one count of child abuse and two counts of tampering with a witness. She received a remarkably light sentence, one year of probation, and was ordered to see a psychiatrist. In 1986, Linda’s husband Jerry Rozar was convicted of child molestation. So there were precedents. And since the murder, the 1999 Parent of the Year Award, an honor conceived by Congress, was bestowed on a Longmont, Colorado man with connections to a cult that prostitutes young girls, so-called “hookers for Jesus,” and has been charged repeatedly with child sexual abuse. The annual honor was chosen by the National Parents Day Foundation, an organization that has ties to the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church, a creation of the Korean CIA and alsovery right-wing.
It happens. Nevertheless, a healthy dose of skepticism was called for. Calhoun’s conclusion about the background of the JonBenet case was based, again, on a file of police interviews passed to him at a Boulder press conference. Fortunately, its origin is no longer a mystery. Calhoun has, since obtaining the file, found out that the documents were supplied by a researcher at the University of Denver. The University, says Calhoun, threatened to fire the tenured faculty member if he continued with his investigation of the Ramsey case, and the file was passed along to reporters in Boulder.
If the statements of Belinda Schultz and other abuse survivors are correct, Boulder has a serious problem. With Calhoun’s file of leaked affidavits, all that remained was to flesh out a Who’s Who register of predators tied to the alleged killer of JonBenet Ramsey in 1996.
  1. Southwestern Child-Pornocrats
Belinda Schultz, 43, was born to the Zander family, an established, aristocratic family in Louisiana, and grew up in Lafayette, near New Orleans. Her first marriage was to Lanny Slaydon, an oil industry marketer. She had four children before the marriage dissolved in the early 1980s. She moved on to Houston to live with family members, and met Paul Schultz. She describes her ex-husband as a “white supremacist” of the “Christian Identity” strain, and a “mafia hit-man” currently serving time for felony child molestation, sentenced in Brazoria County, Texas, the county seat of Angleton. Prior to their divorce, Paul and Belinda ran Custom Air Products on Hampstead Road in northwest Houston, a business formerly run by Paul’s father, Carlton Schultz. She notes that the business had “Mafia” connections. The company largely served the petroleum industry along the Gulf Coast, but everyday management of the business fell to Belinda because her husband was often incapacitated by a weakness for cocaine and alcohol.
They had a child, Nicholas, in 1990. In an affidavit filed with the Pearland, Texas PD, Nicholas recalls that his father used to receive “sugar” and “lots of money: when he pimped his son out to pedophiles frequenting the adult bookstores on Houston’s south side.
Belinda’s second marriage crumbled when she began to suspect that he was bisexual and had a gay lover, Tenourio Luga, sometimes “Lucas,” a reputed explosives expert and informant to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, who has provided his services to the Mexican Mafia and CIA. Luga is a suspected drug runner. He has been investigated in the past by the BATF for the stockpiling of firearms and explosives.
A) The Huey Meaux Connection
  1. Paul Schultz, according to his ex-wife, was also a coeval of Huey Meaux, the famed record producer and a convicted child molester. On January 30, 1996, the Associated Press reported: “Huey Meaux, 66, was arrested and appeared in court Monday on charges of possession of child pornography and cocaine. He was released after posting bonds totaling $110,000. After police went public with the allegations Monday, two people came forward to say they were assaulted. Meaux then was charged additionally with two counts of sexually assaulting children. Police investigators seized hundreds of videotapes and more than 1,000 photographs last week from offices rented by Meaux at Houston’s Sugar Hill Recording Studio. Meaux formerly owned the studio.”
  2. Huey was charged with possession of drugs and child pornography and two counts of sexual assault on a child. Two weeks after the arrest, Shannon McDowell Brasher, 25, filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against Meaux, alleging that he had plied her with illegal drugs as a prelude to sexual assault, “exploitation and other perverted and unnatural sex acts.” He also persuaded accomplices to assault her and videotaped the acts, according to Ms Brasher. State District Judge Mark Davidson issued a temporary restraining order sought by Brasher’s attorneys, Dick DeGuerin and Wayne Isgitt. The order prohibited the record producer or others from destroying evidence or retaliating against Brasher.
  3. Belinda Schultz’s contention that Meaux participated in a child sex ring is substantiated by Brasher and court transcripts. Belinda’s son Nicholas, age six at the time of Meaux’s arrest, identified the accused in a televised news report. Belinda called Bill Colson, a detective with the Pearland Police Department. Colson did not investigate the sex-ring allegation, though he told her that he would contact Houston police to search for a photo of Nicholas among Meaux’s child pornography collection. Frustrated with Colson’s false promises, she contacted Detective A.D. Wright, the officer in charge of the Meaux case. Wright confirmed a connection between Meaux and Paul Schultz. In addition, according to Calhoun’s file, Officer P.C. Taylor of the CID section produced telephone records indicating that Schultz and Meaux had made “numerous” calls to one another. Houston police offered that they had a “thick file” on Schultz, linking him to several known pedophiles in Houston.
B) Jerry J. Moore, Houston Real Estate Developer
One of Paul Schultz’s confederates in the sex ring, according to Nicholas Schultz, was a wealthy Republican, one Jerry J. Moore. Nicholas says that he once accompanied Moore by plane to Colorado.
In January 1996, the federal Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) announced that it sought a $250,000 civil penalty against Charles R. Vickery, former senior chairman of the First National Bank of Bellaire, Texas. The OCC charged that in 1991, Vickery directed the bank to make illicit loans to Houston real estate magnate Jerry J. Moore and corporations owned and controlled by him. Vickery also granted some $50,000 of title insurance premiums paid by Moore on the loans for his personal use. The loans violated federal lending limit law and triggered alarms at the OCC . The S&L was issued a cease and desist order.
  1. Jerry J. Moore is now one of the wealthiest men in Texas. His real estate company was recently bought out for $400 million. He is also active in Republican state politics. Nicholas Schultz maintains that he was taken to Moore’s antebellum mansion, Nicholstone, not far from Dickerson, Texas, and describes the home as a distribution point for child pornography. Huey Meauxwas a regular at Moore’s mansion, according to the boy’s statements.
Moore’s social connections to the Mafia are consistent with the “hit man” allegation raised by Belinda Schultz. Moore’s social circle included: Leonard Capaldi, convicted by the district court in the southern district of Texas on charges of bank fraud and bribery, stemming from his involvement in the April 4, 1986 collapse of Mainland Savings Bank. This S&L lost $300 million. Capaldi was sentenced to the Federal Correctional Institute in Milan, Michigan.
  1. Leading lights of the Mainland Savings scandal: arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, James Bath (a business associate of George W. Bush, recruited to the CIA by George, Sr,), Martin Schimmer (for walking off with Teamster steelworker pension funds), Herman K. Beebe, a known Mafioso. Another gangland chum of Jerry J. Moore is Jack Tocco, a Detroit crime boss. Political ties have included late Texas Governor John Connally and Lloyd Bentson, former Secretary of the Treasury.
  2. The Prime of Ms Tweet Kimball
Another connection to Paul Schultz was the late Mildred “Tweet” Kimball. Tweet lived in a castle on US 85, just south of Denver in a small town called Sedalia. Nicholas Schultz states that he was taken to the castle and molested there by adults.
The castle was deeded to Kimball by Merritt Ruddock, a member of the U.S. diplomatic corps, an obscure CIA official and her first of four divorced husbands. Tweet Kimball divorced Ruddock in 1955, and as she explained to a local reporter in 1996: “When I divorced him, he said I’d probably go back to Tennessee and talk about him. He said “If you’ll buy property west of the Mississippi, I’ll help you.”
7, And that’s what I did. She bought a 24-room castle on a 4,000 acre estate, built on a promontory with a view of the Rockies. Ruddock had good reason to buy her silence. He was the immediate deputy of the CIA’s Frank Wisner, the notorious overseer of Nazi recruitment by the agency immediately after WW II. Ruddock was hired by Wisner in 1949.
Ray Cline, another notorious Agency stinkbug (the organizer of a support network for George Bush, Sr.’s 1980 campaign. composed almost entirely of former intelligence officers headed by Steven Halper, Cline’s son-in-law), kept close to Ruddock throughout the war. Cline recalls Ruddock as a hard drinker and “a personal manipulator of ideas and people.”
  1. (The Colorado Department of Tourism doesn’t advertise the fact, but the state has a thriving intelligence establishment. Loring Wirbel, an environmental researcher in Monument, Colorado, found that worldwide “intelligence expansion by U.S. agencies has a very real impact on Colorado.
Buckley [Air Force Base] is now the major employer in the Denver metro area, with the classified Aerospace Data Facility section of the base responsible for far more jobs than the public Tactical Air Command portion of the base. The Denver Business Journal estimated in April that classified intelligence spending by NSA and NRO in Colorado may exceed $3 billion annually. Support facilities for Buckley include Falcon Air Force Base east of Colorado Springs, which performs intelligence fusion missions; Lockheed-Martin’s Waterton Canyon plant in southwest Denver, which builds spy satellites and Titan-4 rockets; Peterson Air Force Base, the headquarters of the Space Command; and the aging North American Aerospace Defense Command inside Cheyenne Mountain west of Colorado Springs.
Another Air National Guard base outside Greeley, Colorado, is receiving many mobile satellite reconnaissance troops formerly housed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, part of a mission to make the Colorado Front Range a center of excellence for technical intelligence.”
  1. Merritt Ruddock was not the only member of the family with CIA and Nazi ties. Ms Kimball’s father, according to a note found in the Belinda Schultz file, “Colonel Kimball of Chattanooga, Tennessee, had been a prime mover in the grown of the Post-WWI Ku Klux Klan.” (The repetitious links to Nazism in the testimony of Nicholas Schultz, a 7-year-old boy, recalls his mother’s statement that Paul Schultz is a “white supremacist,” and is obviously among friends.)
She bonded with her castle and its environs, re-christened Cherokee Ranch, and lived like a European monarch. A tour guide told an AP reporter, “the house has a number of Portuguese tile murals and many examples of parquetry (an artistic inlaid wood design done on furniture). As she describes the lavish contents of several china cabinets, words like Dresden, Spode, Meissen and Waterford slip into the conversations. That bed was built for Charles II, and he actually slept in it. This inlaid cabinet came from the court of Spain, and the pictures represent Aesop’s fables. The libraries are full of first editions, some quite old and valuable. Well, with names like Dickens and Thackeray on the bindings, one would think so.”
  1. Tweet Kimball died in 1999. She had been an active Republican. Kimball served on the Douglas County Planning Commission and the commissioners’ Water Advisory Board, as well as the board of the Douglas County Educational Foundation. She also spent 14 years on the board of the Denver Art Museum as accessions chairman. She was the local matriarch of local Republican party politics and frequently played hostess to the Douglas County Republican caucus.
  2. “Kimball’s castle and ranchland provided an extravagant vehicle for her varied pursuits,” the local County News-Press noted in her obituary last January, “wildlife conservation, a vast, eclectic art collection, politics, innovative ranching, royal relationships and storied social events.”12
2) Supporting Evidence of Child Sex Ring Involvement
As Calhoun mentioned, in March of this year, Boulder detectives flew to San Luis Obispo, California, to interview Mary Bienkowski, a licensed family therapist. Bienkowski claimed to have information pertaining to the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. The woman said that her mother’s godfather is Fleet White, a friend of John Ramsey. The therapist had urged police in Boulder to interview her client:
Regarding Bienkowski:
A private therapist said Friday she stands behind her client who claims to have crucial information that could help investigators in the death of JonBenet Ramsey. Mary Bienkowski, a licensed marriage, family and child counselor, said her client gave Boulder police specific names of individuals who are witnesses in the killing of JonBenet as well as ongoing sexual and physical abuse of other children.
“If they do their job and investigate what needs to be investigated, the rest of the pieces will fall into place, and nobody is going to like what they find out,” she said. “This person wouldn’t be coming forward and risking everything if it were not because she wanted the abuse to stop and wanted to protect other children.”
Bienkowski said she has treated her client for the past 10 years for trauma endured as a repeated victim of sexual assault. Because her client had information that a widespread sex ring could have been behind the Dec. 26, 1996, strangulation and beating death of 6-year-old JonBenet, she encouraged the woman to take the information to authorities.
JonBenet was found in the basement of her family’s Boulder home. Her parents, John and Patsy, are the focus of a police investigation, although the couple have denied involvement in their daughter’s death.
After 13 months of investigating the case, a Boulder grand jury disbanded in October without charges being filed. During an interview Friday with the Daily Camera at a downtown San Luis Obispo coffee shop, Bienkowski blasted the Boulder Police Department for not actively investigating the list of people she said her client believes may have knowledge of who killed JonBenet.
She would not divulge the names of those thought to be involved, saying that information should first be given to law enforcement officials. The Whites have not returned phone calls from the Daily Camera. John Ramsey’s attorney has declined to comment on the new information.
Boulder police questioned Bienkowski’s client in Colorado for five hours. The FBI interviewed her as well. Detectives also contacted her family and interviewed some of them in California. And then the whole matter was dropped. Bienkowski lost faith in the police and refused to cooperate any further.
13. Who left warnings on her answering machine? The Daily Times-Call in Longmont, Colorado reported in March that a reliable witness “identified the voices as [those] of two women [among others] accused of victimizing thenow-37-year-old [informant]. The woman remains in hiding.”
The anonymous callers told Bienkowski:
1. “Hello Mary. This is a very interested party in regards to [your client’s] welfare. [Her] past and her future are of no, of no concern to you. She made an error in judgment when she came to see you and you have caused her nothing but pain and suffering. Her main concern now is her new husband and her family. She has started a life and is going to be moving as far away from you as possible. She belongs with her family and nobody else. She is off limits to you.”
2. [Caller Two]: “Hello. Leave [your client] alone. We take care of our own. Everything. And nothing is any of your business.”
3. [Caller Two] “Hello. It’s high time that you caught on that [the informant] doesn’t have time for your foolishness. Thank you.”
4. [Caller Two] “[She] is going on an extended vacation with her family and while there will seek medical care for her problems. [The woman] has forgotten more than you will ever know.”
  1. [Caller Two] “Hello. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will never hurt us. So leave [her] alone. It’s against the law to disturb the peace. Don’t forget it.”
14. The statement of the informant that JonBenet was killed in a sadistic sex game was upheld independently by forensic specialist Dr. Cyril Wecht, who studied the autopsy file and concluded that JonBenet’s abuse occurred over a period of time.
Wecht: “This evidence of abuse, tied literally and figuratively to the cords around her neck and wrist, was enough to draw the conclusion that a sick sex game had gone awry.” But the medical evidence “so far suggested that the vaginal penetration had been a carefully controlled, limited situation not a savage sexual assaults. While the attacker was applying the perverted useof the garrote that pinched the vagus nerve in her neck and eventually shut down her heart and lungs, the young prey had suddenly turned lifeless without explanation, perhaps literally in her abuser’s arms. Wasn’t it likely that the shocked and panicking molester had shaken JonBenet in a futile attempt to return her to consciousness? A few anxiety-driven shakesand a ‘wake up! Wake up!’ had failed to restore her to life, but had inflicted the bruises to the temporal lobes of the brain.”
15. A panel of pediatric experts assembled from all parts of the country states unanimously that JonBenet had injuries “consistent with prior trauma and sexual abuse.” The medical affidavits referred to “past violation of the vagina,” “chronic abuse,” “evidence of both acute injury and chronic sexual abuse.”
  1. Author Stephen Singular, a Boulder native, believed so strongly that organized pedophilia and child porn lurked behind the murder of the child that he published a book exploring the sex ring angle, Presumed Guilty. According to Singular’s publisher, “some highlights of the book suggest that one or both of the Ramsey parents unknowingly exposed their daughter to danger that fateful Christmas night,” and reminds, significantly, “human DNA found on her clothing matched nothing found in the Ramsey home”
  2. Evan Ravitz and Bob MacFarland, Boulder political activists who shared Singular’s perspective on the case, gave eight of the grand jurors hearing testimony regarding the death of JonBenet Ramsey excerpts of Singular’s book, theorizing that that the girl may have been killed by someone involved in a child pornography ring. Ravitz and MacFarland were cited with contempt of court. Ravitz, wearing a crumpled purple T-shirt, explained to District Judge Roxanne Bailin that the leakers planned on petitioning the D.A.’s office to allow them to testify before the grand jury, and present evidence of corruption in the city, including drug dealing and child pornography possibly “related to the slaying and handling of the Ramsey case.”
Child porn is “an important line of investigation that we hear Hunter has stayed away from,” Ravitz told Judge Bailin.18 But homicide detectives considered this angle a “side theory,” yet have acknowledge that the killer “may have been involved in a child pornography ring that operated in or around Boulder and had earmarked JonBenet as a likely subject.” The connection to child pornography with child sex murders is by no means original.
In 1997, Jeremy Strohmeyer:
18. Stalked a seven-year-old girl in a Las Vegas casino before murdering her in a restroom. Strohmeyer was an admitted collector of child pornography. “If the pornography connection is true,” the Internet Crime Library observes, “then the murder may have been committed by more than one person as part of a conspiracy.”
  1. The market in Colorado for child prostitution and pornography is a relatively large silent minority. In 1995, the Colorado Department of Human Services filed 5,085 cases of sexual abuse of the 7,931 referred to the agency. Of these,1,160 victims were abused in the state. But the department may investigate a tiny fraction of the actual cases. One-half of one percent of children report sexual abuse, according to Dr. Richard D. Krugman, dean of the University of Colorado Medical School and director of the C. Henry Kemp Center for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.
20. a) A Brotherhood In 1997, the Boulder PD contacted Dale Yeager and Denise Knoke at Seraph, Inc. in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, a security consulting firm summarized in sales brochures as “an international company [with] extensive sources throughout Europe, South America, the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia and Africa. Our associates are investigative professionals and former intelligence officers”, and asked them to submit an analysis of the ransom note. Yeager and Knoke claimed without hesitation that Patsy Ramsey was the author, joining the chorus of police and tabloid reporters who kept at the parents, and reported that Psalm 118:27.
b) interpreted as the source of the $118,000 ransom demand, “Decorate the festival with leafy boughs and bind the sacrifices to be offered with thick cords to the horns of the altar” is commonly cited by “white supremacists,” who “use the redemption and sacrifice ideas to form a justification for killings.” Despite the neo-nazi nuance, Yeager and Knoke were positively certain that JonBenet’s mother forged the kidnap letter. “Our conclusion,” Yeager offered, “is that you are investigating a child’s murder with ritualistic overtones. Strangulation and sexual assault are most commonly seen in sadomasochism between heterosexual and homosexual adults”.
21. On February 27, 2000, Yeager explained to a CBS 2 News reporter, “What we believe was happening in Patsy’s mind was that her daughter was losing control, becoming a wild rebel. She felt (her daughter) was becoming evil.”
22. Patsy Ramsey did not exactly fit the white supremacist profile, and she certainly wasn’t known to participate in “ritual murder.” Paul Schultz, not incidentally, rings the bell on both counts. He is a member, according to the interviewers of Belinda Schultz, of a “heterodox Christian” cult with Nazi leanings that found its way into the intelligence establishment via the German presence at Tweet Kimball’s castle in Sedalia.
The occult Brotherhood of the White Temple, as this sect was known, survives and has reportedly evolved into an underground terrorist cell. The same “faction” that warned Mary Bienkowski to back off? Police investigating the Ramsey case also received warnings. Blood was splashed on Detective Linda Arndt’s front door. The mutilated carcass of a cat was left on Steve Thomas’s front lawn (if his statements have any credibility, given the flagrant distortions in his book on the case, clearly contrived to widen the umbrella of suspicion that has hung over the parents since the smears began). Sergeant Bob Wilson was at home when four high-powered rounds were fired through his bedroom window and nearly hit him. After these events, “there was no follow-up by the police department” Steve Thomas complains, “which apparently regarded bullets, blood and dead cats as minor”
23. Belinda Schultz has tied her ex-husband to a cultic, “white-supremacist” terrorist underground with domestic intelligence connections and the murder of JonBenet Ramsey but despite his resemblance to the killer’s profile, Paul Schultz has not been asked for a sample of his hand-writing.
b) The Belgium Syndrome The behavior of law enforcement officials and the media has been odd since the 911 call. John Ramsey was the CEO of a key military-industrial subsidiary, Lockheed, and his daughter had been murdered by a group that claimed to “represent a small foreign faction” (Brotherhood of the White Temple?) Ordinarily, the “Lindbergh Law” requires a “rebuttable presumption” in a high-profile kidnap, particularly one pulled off by terrorists fronting for a “foreign faction,” a widely overlooked point raised by journalist Donald Freed, author of Killing Time, a forensic study of the O.J. Simpson case.
Notification of the FBI in a murder case involving terrorists is mandatory, and officers in Boulder did contact Washington. But the Bureau did not respond.
  1. Freed reports that someone in a lofty position assured the FBI and Lockheed Martin Security “prior to the 911 call that any report coming from Boulder “would not affect ‘national security,'” and directed to “let the police handle it.”
25. Freed coined the phrase “Belgium Syndrome” after the recent refusal of Belgian officials and the justice system to respond to a series of child murders, “not because they were involved in the murders, but because they were involved in their own way in pornography, child sexuality and related elements, some of which are not even illegal but all of which would be death sentences for their careers.”
Fleet White, in his letter “to the people of Colorado,” maintained: “It is our firm belief that the District Attorney and others intend to use the Grand Jury and its secrecy in an attempt to protect their careers and also serve the conflicting interests of powerful, influential and threatening people who have something to hide or protect.”
26. “Conflicting interest” may explain the inertia of detectives in Boulder when the photo of the young beauty contestant turned up in the home of a child pornographer in Columbus, Ohio suspected of involvement in the abduction of another Colorado girl. James Partin, 35, was arrested in December, 1997 for selling child pornography on the Net. Police searched Partin’s home and found a newspaper clipping about the 1983 kidnap of Beth Miller,14, and a map of Idaho Springs marked with several X’s.
The girl vanished after a jog near her Idaho Springs home, and Partin lived in the area at the same time. Boulder police announced that they would contact the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to learn more about the Ramsey photo in Partin’s collection, but a local newspaper reported that they “do not believe that Partin had any involvement” in the slaying. “It’s not a high priority,” police spokeswoman Leslie Aaholm assured reporters.
  1. Did the DA’s reluctance to question Partin about the JonBenet picture suggest an unwillingness to solve the case? Pornographic photos of JonBenet were posted on the Internet.28 In his August 6, 1998 resignation letter, Boulder Detective Steve Thomas openly accused then police chief Tom Koby and other officials of sabotaging the case: “During the investigation detectives would discover, collect, and bring evidence to the district attorney’s office, only to have it summarily dismissed or rationalized as insignificant.
The most elementary of investigative efforts, such as obtaining telephone and credit card records, were met without support, search warrants denied. The significant opinions of national experts were casually dismissed or ignored by the district attorney’s office, even the experienced FBI were waved aside.” Thomas was ordered not to question certain witnesses, “and all but dissuaded from pursuing particular investigative efforts. Polygraphs were acceptable for some subjects, but others seemed immune from such requests. Innocent people were not “cleared”, publicly or otherwise, even when it was unmistakably the right thing to do, as reputations and lives were destroyed. Some in the district attorney’s office, to this day, pursue weak, defenseless, and innocent people in shameless tactics that one couldn’t believe more bizarre if it were made up.”
c) Lawrence Schiller & the Designated Patsy (Ramsey) Denver reporter Joe Calhoun takes aim at Lawrence Schiller, the made-for-TV “expert” who denounces all sex-ring allegations in shrill terms. “Schiller, along with talk show hosts and the more ‘responsible press,’ appear to be preparing the public for an indictment of Patsy Ramsey for the murder of her child,” Calhoun says. The patsy would be Patsy. ”
According to a source in Boulder, the script reads that the much physically and mentally traumatized Patsy Ramsey went to her daughter’s room that night and found that she had wet the bed and in a fit of exasperation and rage struck the child and accidentally killed her and then was assisted by her husband to try to cover up the crime. ” The bed-wetting scenario, repeated in best-selling books on the case and many a talk show, is insupportable upon a moment’s reflection: it entails a belief, Calhoun points out, that Patsy Ramsey “stuck her child in the head, killing her, and then tied a garrote around her neck and sexually violated her daughter’s corpse to cover up the crime.”

The East Area Rapist part 7 - Excitement's Crave, Brian and Katie Maggiore and more.

Welcome back to my seventh entry in my "The East Area Rapist" series. This post details the attacks on victims 26-28, along with various phone calls and notes presumed to be the work of the infamous rapist. Moreover, I am also delving into the murders of Brian and Katie Maggiore. This is my longest post to date, so I hope it provides valuable information and is worth the time-consuming read.
Victim 26
It was Saturday, October 29, 1977, at 1:45 in the morning. A husband woke up to the consistent tapping on his feet. After rolling over the intruder used his flashlight beam to temporarily blind him and said through gritted teeth, Don't move or I'll blow your fucking brains out. I know you have a gun in your drawer somewhere. The husband cooperated with the treats, mentioning his weapon was nearby.
The disturbance woke the wife who was perplexed by the commotion. The trespasser took notice of the situation and threw shoelaces at her commanding to bind her husband's wrists. She was shaking with fear and hysteria and accidentally tied one hand, causing the intruder to lash out in agitation, Bitch! I'll blow your fucking brains out if you try that again!
After suppressing the couple the intruder left the master bedroom to rummage through other areas in the homestead. Minutes later he returned with a much more volatile approach -- accusing the couple of untying each other's bindings. His paranoia was increasing as he forced the wife into the living room with a gun barrel pointed at her back and a knife against her throat.
He proceeded to make the wife lay down on her stomach as he blindfolded her with strips of towels he had cut during his ransacking. The intruder attempted to comfort her by saying, I'm not going to hurt you. I only want money and food for my van. Though she was unable to see, she courageously spoke up saying she hadn't any money on her personally but would write him a check. That statement only perpetuated his irritation further, telling the wife, Shut your fucking mouth!
The intruder then straddled on her back and put his penis into her hands and ordered, Play with it. You better make it good. She tried telling the rapist she had no feeling in her hands due to the lack of circulation, but her plea only caused him to hiss at her, Shut up, or I'll cut off your ears. He changed her positioning and instructed her to suck his penis that was slathered with lotion, which made her sick in the progress.
Thereafter, he continued his abuse and after climaxing, his demeanor transitioned into regret that seemed authentic according to the victim. He began sobbing erratically, hyperventilating and repeating the phrase, I'm sorry, Mom. Mommy, please help me! I don't want to do this, Mommy.
Suddenly, the perpetrator regained his composure and checked upon the husband for an extended period of time. When he returned to the wife he raped her for the second time. Once more, he continued his remorseful plea with a high pitched voice, Mommy, I don't want to do this. Someone, please help me.
Nevertheless, he managed to calm himself down and told the wife, I'm going to watch television. You better keep your fucking mouth shut, bitch. Shortly after, he grabbed dinnerware from the kitchen cabinets and stacked them on the victim's back. Meanwhile, he removed her wedding rings and left the residence. When the husband and wife felt the rapist was finally gone, they undid their bindings and called the authorities.

Victim 27
In Sacramento, California on Thursday, November 10, 1977, at 3:30 in the morning, a 56-year-old mother awakened to the sound of her patio glass sliding doors opening from her bedroom. Startled by the sound, she immediately jumped up, but a flashlight beam on her face blinded her. Remarkably, she remained steadfast and undaunted by the intruder's presence and asked, What do you want with me? I'm an old lady.
In a softened manner, the trespasser replied, I'm not going to hurt you. All I want is your money. Lay down on your stomach. She abided but still remained unphased by his tenacity. He soon clasped her hands, wrists, and ankles together. She began complaining that her bindings were too tight, but the masked intruder ignored her quibble and said, Shut up! Do you want me to cut off your fingers? Who else is home? Don't lie to me or I'll slit your throat. She attested her thirteen-year-old daughter was sleeping in a nearby room.
Moments later the intruder crept his way into the daughter's room and started shaking her in order to wake her up. Unaware of her surroundings the teenager said, Leave me alone, assuming it was her mother. She abruptly realized the dire situation when the individual placed his knife against her throat and screaming, This isn't a joke! Roll over and put your hands behind your back.
Though she was frightened, she followed in her mother's bravery and told the intruder no. Her defiance exasperated him resulting in more threats, Do as I say or I'll slit your throat and watch you bleed to death, all the while moving his knife towards the back of her ears and asking, Do you want me to cut off your ear?
With the blackout being lifted nearly a year prior and the coverage this criminal was getting through the media, the young daughter managed to put the puzzle pieces together and realize who the perpetrator was. She responded to his question, relaying her carelessness regarding the empty threat of removing her ear(s).
This surprised the individual, making him momentarily stop with the menacing ultimatums. He eventually gave up and tied her hands together saying, Look, all I want is your money. Where is it? She purposefully lied to him saying she didn't have any. Frustrated by the lack of obedience, he left the teenager's room and resumed his duties on the mother. However, his threats were of no avail as the mother continued behaving unconcerned.
He left once more and retried his onslaught with the teenage daughter. By the time he returned, she had unloosened her bindings around her ankles. The assailant fastened them together again and angrily declared, If you try that again, I will fucking kill your mother.
Thereafter, he proceeded to ransack the home and retrieve dishes from the kitchen to place on the mother's back, indicating she wasn't the prime target for rape. Before leaving her room he intently told her, If I hear these dishes rattle, I'll fucking kill you, bitch. Do you understand? All I want is your money. Do you hear me? The mother ignored his responses, but he continued repeating the same sentences until she finally corresponded. He then went on to mention, I need things for my apartment. My car is parked outside and I'm going back to Los Angeles.
Afterward, he reappeared in the daughter's room, blindfolding and gagging her with strips of towels he had cut during the rummaging. He then squatted down and put his penis into her hands saying, Grab it. Squeeze it. Do you know what this is? She told the assailant no as he asked, Have you ever been fucked before? This time she said she didn't know, confusing the rapist.
He demanded her to roll over, but she declined and asked why. The threats continued spewing from the assailant as he tried explaining what an erection was. After multiple attempts, he was finally able to successfully rape her in a satisfactory fashion. He eventually gave up from this botched attack and returned to the mother who was shivering from the breeze of the opened patio door(s). The rapist took a sleeping bag from the floor and draped it over her for warmth and the said, I'm going to load some groceries from the kitchen and leave. Shockingly, he stayed true to his word and left the home entirely.
Noteworthy points
  • This attack is quite significant because it presents a second occurrence of the women victim(s) gaining the upper hand, albeit slightly. His seventh victim feigned him by showering him with compliments during the rape. This ultimately led him to let his guard down momentarily. With this attack, instead of flattery, the women made a stand and refused to let their inner terror be visible, leading to the intruder's downfall in terms of a successful crime.
  • While it's possible the intruder lived in Los Angeles, California, it's highly unlikely. This attack occurred in Sacramento, which is roughly a six-hour drive. Furthermore, he used this particular phrase often in other areas including Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, Del Dayo and more. In these locations, he would mention to the victim(s) he lived in an apartment a few blocks away.
  • The thirteen-year-old was his youngest victim. She attended a private school and told authorities his penis was approximately five inches long when erect, though she had never seen this male organ, except in books during sexual education class. There is also a minor discrepancy about her attack. Initially, the police believed she was raped, but the teenager and her mother denied it. However, on the recent program "48 Hours," the crimes of The East Area Rapist were covered and the teenager, now older, said she was raped.
  • This attack occurred in a condominium and the kitchen was located upstairs, whereas most of the crimes committed by The East Area Rapist were single story residences with a detached garage.
  • A month prior, the victim had been receiving a plethora of phone calls. When she answered with a customary hello, the person on the other end of the line would immediately hang up.
  • Three days before the sexual assault a note was discovered in the bathroom of a nearby college campus. It read, The East Side Rapist was here. I will rape my first black girl tonight. The dumb cops will never find me. Obviously, it's unknown whether or not this was written by the infamous serial offender. Nonetheless, it's still an intriguing piece of circumstantial evidence if genuine.
  • One day before the assault, a neighbor of victim 27 heard dubious sounds between the time of 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. He described the first sound as something falling against the home of the victim. It's unsure what the second noise was, but he went outside to look around and nothing unusual was in sight.
  • The night of the attack, another neighbor heard sounds of someone meddling with the locks on her glass sliding doors at 12:00 in the morning. This prompted her dog to bark and she turned on the lights. However, nobody was in view. Three hours later another neighbor reported hearing tampering with her locks.
  • During the month of November 1977, a second annual town hall meeting took place in Mira Loma, California. This is significant. It was at these series of meetings where the photos taken of the crowd occurred, ultimately creating a fandom of the individual known as The Puffy Jacket Guy. Many people associate these photos with the first town hall meeting in November 1976, which is a vital misconception.
Victim 28
It was a Friday night on December 2, 1977, in Foothill Farms, California when a wife and mother of two was awakened from her sleep at approximately 11:45 p.m. In the standard formality, the intruder flashed his beam in her eyes and whispered loudly enough for her to hear, Shut up or I'll gag you. If you don't listen, I will kill your little boy.
Needless to say, she cooperated completely with the intruder as he fastened her wrists and ankles together, along with obscuring her vision with a blindfold. He guided her into the family room and removed her underwear, tossing them in the hallway. As he was beginning to gag her, she objected by telling the masked intruder she wouldn't be able to calmly tell her children to go back to bed if they happened upon them.
Meanwhile, the trespasser was having difficulty remaining focused, with his attention being averted to the living room window where he continually peeked through the drapes due to the sound of children playing in the street. This distraction caused him to paranoidly mumble with vexation, You think you're smarter, but I'm smarter than you!
He returned to the constrained mother and stood over her momentarily before rummaging the household. All of a sudden, the individual disappeared into the night and left the family unharmed. The bound mother managed to hop and stumble her way to the phone and call her neighbor, who quickly rushed over to cut loose the bindings and call the police.
Noteworthy points
  • Thirty minutes before the attack emerged, the wife's husband -- an Army Lt. Colonel stationed at Sacramento Army Depot to advise members of the National Guard -- had left home to attend a casino with friends.
  • At 11:00 p.m. a phone call was made to the sheriff's department. Though the message was not recorded, the anonymous person allegedly whispered into the receiver, I'm going to commit another rape tonight.
  • This particular attack may not have involved thorough planning, because of the intruder's lack of knowledge on the mother's children. She had two daughters instead of a boy as the criminal threatened to harm.
  • The victim said she heard a van engine rev up next to her residence when the intruder left. This is an interesting clue since a van had been seen at other crimes in the months beforehand. Furthermore, if her description is accurate, it correlates with the statements made by the perpetrator himself, when telling his victims he was only wanting money and food for his "van."
  • The night of the attack, a sixteen-year-old neighbor saw a beige colored station wagon next to the victim's home. He said the vehicle didn't belong to anyone living nearby, which is why he made note of the car to begin with. Moreover, the windows weren't covered in frost as other cars in the vicinity, indicating the driver had the heater on to defrost the windows. This begs the question, though: Did the victim mishear the vehicle engine she claimed to be a van? Nevertheless, both vehicle models have allegedly been used for previous crimes.
  • No weapon was brought to the crime. If there was, it was not seen by the victim. This is strange because The East Area Rapist typically brought a knife and handgun with him. The victim did say the intruder wore latex gloves that doctors generally use, though this cannot be confirmed because she based this on the feel of the gloves on her skin rather than eyesight.
  • The police questioned the children playing outside when the attack was taking place, but they all said they hadn't heard or seen anything strange.
  • The victim's home had been burglarized on October 27, 1977, while she was away from home visiting a friend, she forgot to lock her door. However, upon her return, it was locked. This understandably confused her and she immediately browsed her home for missing items. She discovered her thermostat was turned off, two photographs of her were stolen and a jar of pickles in her fridge had been readjusted to another shelf.
  • According to Richard Shelby's book, "Hunting a Psychopath," a man by the name of Richard Boren was arrested a few months before this attack occurred that featured many similarities to this aborted crime.
  • The intruder entered the residence through the glass sliding doors from the patio. Interestingly, a few weeks prior her spare key for the front door disappeared from underneath the floor mat. She assumed one of the children had accidentally lost it.
  • Between November 11 - December 1, 1977, the victim was receiving anonymous hang-up phone calls every day after 2:00 p.m.
  • Strange occurrences in the victim's neighborhood started taking place on December 1, 1977. In the afternoon a neighbor of victim 28 spotted a man walking from Woodridge School. She was attending to her garden when the two made eye contact from a considerable distance. He supposedly watched her for a prolonged amount of time before leaving. Shortly thereafter, more people in the community saw a beige colored station wagon parked next to the home of victim 28, which was a common vehicle reported in relation to attacks committed on victims. Later that evening, two women living together had their electricity turned off by somebody unknown.
  • I'm not sure of its validation, but the women who stated their electricity had been turned off had received a phone call seven months prior in May 1977. The caller whispered three times, You are next.
This would be the last known attack committed by The East Area Rapist in 1977. Though no more rapes occurred, the criminal would still have a productive month in December before the new year.
On December 9, 1977, the twenty-first victim(s) received a phone call from a male who remained incognito. The caller had said, Merry Christmas, it's me again! The wife told authorities the voice matched the sound of her rapist earlier that year. It's worth reiterating the husband of this family was the Italian individual who berated Detective Richard Shelby at the first series of town hall meetings in November of 1976.
The following evening on December 10, 1977, dispatchers from Sacramento's Sheriff's Department experienced a strange phone call known as The Watt Avenue Recording at 10:00 p.m. The voice appeared to match the phone call made on December 2, 1977, who stated he was going to rape someone that night. Though a crime was attempted, it was botched due to children frolicking outside in the street.
After the phone call, officers were on high alert surveying Watt Avenue and the surrounding areas with the intention of apprehending the possible rapist if he remained true to his word. Around 2:30 in the morning -- now December 11 -- deputies saw a masked individual riding a bicycle at a high rate of speed on the bridge leading to Watt Avenue. The authorities turned their sirens on and a chase ensued, but the biker managed to elude them.
Two hours later the biker was spotted again by city police in the general vicinity. Once more a pursuit took place, but the perpetrator yet again managed to flee after abandoning the bicycle and running on foot. I'm not sure of its validity, but the bicycle had been reported stolen from Redding, California.
With the day now December 11, 1977, the newspaper publisher, The Sacramento Bee, along with the Mayor and television studio for KVIE 6 TV received a poem by a person claiming to be The East Area Rapist. It's unclear of its authenticity, but it's rather coincidental it's not by the same individual who eluded capture mere hours earlier. The title of the poem is:
Excitement's Crave
  • All those mortal's surviving birth
  • Upon facing maturity,
  • Take inventory of their worth
  • To prevailing society.
  • Choosing values becomes a task;
  • Oneself must seek satisfaction.
  • The selected route will unmask
  • Character when plans take action.
  • Accepting some work to perform
  • At fixed pay, but promises for more,
  • Is a recognized social norm,
  • As is decorum, seeking lore.
  • Achieving while others lifting
  • Should be cause for deserving fame
  • Leisure tempts excitement seeking,
  • What's right and expected seems tame.
  • "Jessie James" has been seen by all,
  • And "Son of Sam" has an author.
  • Others now feel temptations call.
  • Sacramento should make an offer.
  • To make a movie of my life
  • That will pay for my planned exile.
  • Just now I'd like to add the wife
  • Of a Mafia lord to my file.
  • Your East Area Rapist
  • And deserving pest
  • See you in the press or on T.V.
That would be the final form of information regarding The East Area Rapist in 1977. He wouldn't claim his next victim until January 28, 1978. However, on January 2, 1978, he did make two phone calls to his very first rape victim that occurred on June 18, 1976. These phone calls are known as Is Ray There and Gonna Kill You.
Brian and Katie Maggiore
Between the time of 9:00 - 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, 1978, Brian and Katie Maggiore were taking their poodle dog named Thumper on a leisure stroll through the neighborhood on La Alegria Drive located in Rancho Cordova, California. For all intents and purposes, this locale was typically considered a safe community.
At the time of this horrific tragedy, Brian Maggiore was a twenty-one-year-old Air Force Sergeant who was previously stationed in Alaska. His wife of two years, on the other hand, was twenty years old and living in Fresno, California until her husband transferred to Mather Air Force Base where they would relocate to an apartment at La Verta Court in Rancho Cordova, California.
During their casual walk with Thumper, he somehow managed to get free from their grasp and run off into a backyard nearby. The couple quickly chased after their dog and it's at this point things become slightly muddled in terms of what truly transpired.
Suddenly, a ten-year-old boy in his upstairs bedroom heard the terrifying screams of Brian and Katie Maggiore as they began running away from a masked intruder brandishing a handgun and pursuing them. The couple continued sprinting through the backyard of two neighbors who had a fence damaged on the ground that generally separated the yards.
The gunman fired numerous shots and two of the bullets ultimately struck Brian Maggiore and killed him immediately. A stray bullet damaged a glass window and missed the homeowner, Nicholas Ottlinger by mere inches, who quickly grabbed his wife and threw her down to the floor as they lay down in cover.
The shooter kept up his pace with Katie as she shrieked for help at the top of her lungs. She managed to make it to the front gate of a neighbor's residence before the murder fired another shot that fatally struck her in the head. Her deceased body was obstructing the opening to the fence, so the killer hurled himself over the barrier and started fleeing the scene.
In that process, he encountered a seventeen-year-old named Karl Nollsch who was in his opened garage checking on the commotion outside. The killer turned in another direction with posthaste and ran to the end of the block before removing his mask and rapidly walking in the yards of other residences, trying his best to not attract too much attention.
As he walked along the shrubbery trying to remain out of sight, an unsuspecting vehicle was driving down the block with its headlights on. The shooter quickly jumped behind a tree to diminish the driver's view, staying there momentarily until the vehicle was out of view.
While continuing his escape, he eventually walked across a yard where the homeowner as outside tending to her lawn. According to her testimony, he was wearing a World War II bomber jacket with an insignia that represented the 320th Bomb Group. He used his jacket collar to shield his identity, all the while casually telling her, I guess I must be trespassing. Afterward, he disappeared into the night and has never been apprehended.
Noteworthy points
  • The first thing that needs to be addressed is whether or not these murders were committed by The East Area Rapist. It's a hotly debated topic and I'll try my best to refrain from giving my personal opinion and only detail the facts, theories and lingering questions.
  • The general consensus amongst police officers is that this crime was the work of The East Area Rapist. The main source of evidence is a set of shoelaces found at the crime scene that was tied together in the same fashion and knotting the rapist would use on his victims. While many officers are in agreement, there are still those who consider otherwise.
  • It's worth mentioning that The East Area Rapist did operate in this region. Furthermore, Brian had military connections. This can be slightly affiliated with the MO of the rapist, due to many of his victims having ties to the military or the medical field.
  • The main reason there is many discrepancies surrounding this case is due to witnesses saying they saw two men in the area during the attack. However, what fails to get mentioned more often than not is the actual scenario. For one, they weren't seen together committing the crime. It just so happened that a person similar in stature was walking in the opposite direction from which the shooter ran off from. That doesn't perpetuate two people being the killer(s).
  • Karl Nollsch, the seventeen-year-old that encountered the shooter from his garage said this person was approximately 6 foot and was wearing pointy-toed cowboy boots and a leather jacket with a stain. This was not the typical attire The East Area Rapist wore, nor is his height a match. However, he did have the appropriate weight, body stature and appeared to be in his early twenties. Moreover, the validity of two separate statements needs to be considered. The woman tending to her lawn said the man's jacket had an insignia. Is it possible the seventeen-year-old mistook the emblem for a stain, or vice versa (that or the teenager and woman didn't recognize one or the other)? With that being said, it seemingly points to the shooter not being the notorious rapist.
  • In regards of the other male walking in the opposite direction, the general overlay is this individual appeared to have more similarities in terms of clothing, height and weight to The East Area Rapist than the mysterious man Karl Nollsch reported witnessing.
  • In part four of my series, I posted photos of the suspect(s) seen during the crime, along with newspaper clippings detailing the event. I will repost them here for quick accessibility. You can view one of the original newspaper clippings here briefly describing the tragedy. A revised update was eventually made on one of the suspects. Moreover, the revised composite sketch was mentioned in another clipping accessible here. Finally, a little more insight can be gleaned from this brief newspaper article written by staff writer, Paul Mapes.
  • Brian and Katie Maggiore's dog, Thumper, was found in a neighbor's pool shivering from the cold and fear. From what I have gathered, he survived.
  • Prior to the murders, Katie had supposedly been receiving tedious prank phone calls, not only at her home but her occupation as well at Regal Gas Station. Apparently, there are two gas stations with the same name in the general area, because on one occasion the caller told Katie, I'm the person who raped two women in a Regal Gas Station and you're my next victim. You can view the discussion on the proboards and on this WordPress blog. From an excerpt in Richard Shelby's book, "Hunting a Psychopath," he says in chapter 50, Katie had been the victim of crank phone calls and may have been the target of a stalker. The crank phone caller told her he was the one who raped two women in a Regal gas station, and she would be next. Any more information about this possible stalking, or what may have occurred while in Fresno, has not been made public.
  • There are many questions still left unanswered regarding this crime. One of which is why? The leading assumption is that during the chase for Thumper, Brian and Katie stumbled upon their soon to be murderer. If this person is The East Area Rapist, what exactly prompted him to spontaneously react to killing them? It's hard to comprehend, primarily because the rapist had many alleged close calls, especially in the midst of his stalking the day time, yet he never eliminated other witnesses. The most viable reason would be that the couple encountered him without his mask fully on and they knew him personally or well enough to give police a proper name to identify the suspect.
  • Then again, why murder Brian and Katie Maggiore and not Karl Nollsch, who practically faced to face with the perpetrator? Was he out of ammunition with the many shots he fired upon the couple?
  • Another question that is confusing is how did the shoelaces end up at the crime scene if the shooter is not The East Area Rapist? Assuming the shooter was him, the obvious conclusion is that the shoelaces fell out of his pocket during the chase. Either that or he deliberately threw them on the ground to leave his trademark calling card.
  • If this was the work of The East Area Rapist, the murder of Brian and Katie Maggiore would officially be his first two kills (maybe third if he's also the Visalia Ransacker who shot and murdered Claude Snelling).
  • There are a few conclusions that can be theorized with this case, all of which are equally terrifying. One) The shooter was The East Area Rapist or he wasn't. The shooter was wearing attire not generally associated with the rapist. Two) The rapist had an accomplice. Three) The shooter wasn't The East Area Rapist, but the other individual in the composite sketch was, and both men were separately acting on their own behalf in the same neighborhood coincidentally.
  • On a final note, I want to share a photo of Brian and Katie Maggiore before their senseless demise. These two people, including ten other people who were met with a similar fate, once had very happy and fulfilling lives with plans for their future. Their lives should not solely be remembered only by their death, but for who they were as individuals. These pictures hopefully provide just that.
This now concludes part seven. Thank you for taking the time to read this very lengthy entry. You all give me the motivation to continue this series. I've never had an "audience" before who look forward to my posts and check this subreddit to see if I have posted another submission. Because of that, I feel as if it's my responsibility to please those who read these entries, as well as spreading the word on the infamous serial rapist and killer.
